DFM/ADX Investor Number: Who Qualifies and What You Get

Learn how to get a National Investor Number (NIN) to start trading stocks on the UAE exchanges.

An Investor Number, often referred to by its local term رقم المستثمر, is a unique identification used to trade stocks on the major exchanges in the United Arab Emirates.

Who it's for

This scheme is designed specifically for residents living in the United Arab Emirates who are looking to participate in the local stock market. If you are a resident and your goal is to trade stocks, you will need this identification to move forward with your financial activities on the exchanges.

What you get

By completing the registration, you receive a National Investor Number (NIN). This number serves as your official identity within the exchange system. It is the essential requirement that allows you to own, buy, and sell securities on the Dubai Financial Market and the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange. Without this number, you cannot legally hold or trade shares on these platforms.

What it costs you

Registering for your National Investor Number is free. There are no registration fees required to obtain this identification.

The catch to know

The most important thing to remember is that simply owning a National Investor Number does not automatically give you the ability to buy or sell stocks. The number is a requirement, but it is not a trading platform itself. You must also open and maintain a brokerage account. For your trading to work, this brokerage account must be officially linked to your NIN.

How to apply

  1. Visit the official portal for the Dubai Financial Market.
  2. Navigate to the section for registering for a National Investor Number.
  3. Complete the registration process as required by the exchange.
  4. Contact a brokerage to set up an account and link it to your new NIN.
