Better Access to Mental Health Care: Who Qualifies and What You Get

Learn how to access mental health support through a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan and how to manage your costs.

This initiative helps people access professional mental health services through the healthcare system.

Who it's for

To qualify for this support, you must have a Mental Health Treatment Plan provided by your General Practitioner (GP).

What you get

Once you have your plan, you can access professional mental health services. To use this support, you must present a valid referral letter from your doctor.

What it costs you

This service is free to apply for, but you will likely have to pay some out-of-pocket costs.

The catch to know

The government rebate does not cover the entire cost of your sessions. You will be responsible for paying the "gap fee," which is the difference between what your provider charges and the amount covered by the rebate.

How to apply

  1. Make an appointment with your GP to discuss your mental health.
  2. Work with your doctor to create a Mental Health Treatment Plan.
  3. Obtain a formal referral letter from your doctor.
  4. Present your plan and referral letter to your chosen mental health provider.
