Mental Health Treatment Plan: Who Qualifies and What You Get
Learn how to access Medicare rebates for psychological sessions through a Mental Health Treatment Plan in Australia.
This scheme provides a way for people to access professional psychological support through a structured treatment plan that offers financial rebates.
Who it's for
This scheme is designed to support anyone who is currently living with a mental health condition. It is intended to ensure that those needing professional psychological assistance can access the care they require.
What you get
If you have a valid plan in place, you are eligible to receive Medicare rebates. These rebates are designed to help offset the costs of seeing a psychologist. Under this scheme, you can access up to 10 psychological sessions per year to help manage your mental health.
What it costs you
To start using this scheme, you must spend time and effort visiting a General Practitioner (GP). You cannot simply book a session with a psychologist on your own to get the rebate; you must first undergo a consultation with your GP to establish your specific needs and receive a formal referral.
The catch to know
It is important to remember that the support is not automatically continuous. After you have completed your first 6 sessions, there is a requirement to return to your GP. You must sit down with your doctor to review the plan and discuss your progress to ensure the treatment remains appropriate for your needs.
How to apply
- Schedule an appointment with your GP to discuss your mental health.
- Request that your doctor creates a Mental Health Plan for you.
- Take your referral from the GP to a psychologist to begin your sessions.
- Return to your GP for a review once you have finished 6 sessions.
