Volunteer Firefighters Amount: Who Qualifies and What You Get

Learn if you qualify for the tax credit available to volunteer firefighters who complete a minimum number of service hours each year.

This tax credit is designed to recognize the time and effort provided by individuals who serve as volunteer firefighters.

Who it's for

To qualify, you must be a volunteer firefighter who completes at least 200 hours of service within a single year.

What you get

You can claim a non-refundable tax credit based on $3,000 of your income. A non-refundable credit reduces the amount of tax you owe, but it cannot be used to create a refund if your tax bill is already zero.

What it costs you

There is no direct monetary cost to apply. However, you must provide certification of your service hours from your fire chief to prove you met the requirement.

The catch to know

You are not eligible for this credit if you are a career firefighter working for the same department. It is strictly for those serving in a volunteer capacity.

How to apply

  1. Ensure you have documented at least 200 hours of service for the year.
  2. Obtain official certification of these hours from your fire chief.
  3. Claim the credit on your annual tax return.
