Force Majeure Leave: Who Qualifies and What You Get

Learn if you qualify for paid time off to handle urgent family emergencies under the Force Majeure Leave scheme.

Force Majeure Leave provides employees with paid time off to deal with sudden and unexpected family emergencies.

Who it's for

This scheme is designed for employees who find themselves in a position where they must step away from their professional duties to assist their immediate family members. It is intended for those facing urgent crises that require their direct attention and presence.

What you get

When you qualify, you receive paid time off. This means you can manage urgent family crises without losing your regular income or having to use up your standard annual leave or sick pay. It provides a way to handle unpredictable, life-altering events while maintaining your financial stability.

What it costs you

There is no direct monetary fee to access this leave. However, you will need to invest time and effort into the verification process. You will be required to provide evidence to your employer that proves the emergency nature of the situation, ensuring the leave is used specifically for the intended purpose.

The catch to know

It is important to understand that this is not an unlimited benefit. The leave is strictly limited to prevent misuse and ensure it is reserved for genuine emergencies. You are entitled to a maximum of 3 days within a 12-month period, or a maximum of 5 days within a 36-month period. Once you have reached these limits, you will not be able to claim further paid leave under this specific scheme.

How to apply

  1. Notify your employer as soon as you become aware of the emergency.
  2. Discuss the specific nature of the crisis with your manager or HR representative.
  3. Provide the required documentation to verify the emergency nature of the event.
  4. Confirm with your employer how the paid time off will be recorded in your payroll.
