Manual Handling Certificate: Who Qualifies and What You Get

Learn how to get the legal certification required for lifting heavy materials and the costs involved.

This certificate provides legal proof that you have been trained to lift and move heavy materials safely.

Who it's for

This scheme is intended for all manual laborers. It is a necessary requirement for anyone whose job involves the physical movement of heavy objects as part of their daily work duties.

What you get

By completing this scheme, you receive legal certification. This documentation proves that you have the necessary training to lift heavy landscaping materials without risking injury or violating safety regulations. Having this certification helps ensure you are prepared for the physical demands of manual handling tasks on a professional site.

What it costs you

To obtain this certificate, you will face a small financial cost, typically ranging from €50 to €80. In addition to the monetary expense, you must dedicate time to the process, as it requires a half-day of training to complete the necessary curriculum.

The catch to know

The most important thing to remember is that having a Safe Pass is often not enough on its own. Even if you already hold a Safe Pass, many site managers will still require you to hold this specific manual handling certificate before you are allowed to work on their specific site. Failing to have this documentation can lead to being banned from a site.

How to apply

  1. Locate a training provider that offers a certified manual handling course.
  2. Register for a training session, which usually lasts about half a day.
  3. Attend the training and complete the required assessment or practical demonstration.
  4. Secure your certificate and keep it available to show site managers upon request.
