State Pension (Contributory): Who Qualifies and What You Get

Learn if you qualify for the State Pension (Contributory) in Ireland and how your work history affects your weekly payment.

This scheme provides a regular weekly payment to people who have reached retirement age and have paid enough social insurance contributions through their employment.

Who it's for

You qualify if you are aged 66 or older and have paid a sufficient number of PRSI contributions throughout your working life.

What you get

You receive a weekly payment, which can reach a maximum personal rate of €277.30.

What it costs you

There is no fee to apply for this pension. However, you must submit your application roughly three months before you reach the age of 66 to ensure your payments begin on time.

The catch to know

The amount you receive is not fixed for everyone; the total payment depends on how many years you have worked and paid contributions. If you have gaps in your PRSI history where you did not pay into the system, your weekly payment amount may be reduced.

How to apply

  1. Check your contribution history to ensure you meet the requirements.
  2. Prepare your application approximately three months before your 66th birthday.
  3. Submit your application through the official government service portal.
