Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana: Who Qualifies and What You Get

Learn how to open a zero-balance bank account with a debit card and access emergency credit through this national financial inclusion scheme.

This scheme is a national initiative designed to ensure that every person has access to basic banking services.

Who it's for

This is for any citizen who does not currently have a bank account.

What you get

You can open a zero-balance account, which means you can keep money in it without needing to maintain a minimum required amount. You will also receive a RuPay debit card and have access to an overdraft facility, which is a type of credit that allows you to withdraw more money than you currently have in your account.

What it costs you

It is free to open this account. To get started, you will need to provide your KYC documents, which are official identity and address proofs used to verify who you are.

The catch to know

While the account includes an overdraft facility, you cannot use it immediately. You must use and operate your account satisfactorily for at least six months before you become eligible for this credit feature.

How to apply

  1. Visit a local bank branch or a banking correspondent.
  2. Provide your required identity and address documents for verification.
  3. Complete the account opening process.
  4. Collect your debit card and account details.
