SAF Counselling Services: Who Qualifies and What You Get

Access mental health and career transition support if you are a serving NSman in Singapore.

This scheme provides mental health and career transition support for individuals currently fulfilling their national service obligations.

Who it's for

This service is specifically designed for serving NSmen. It is intended to support those currently undergoing their mandatory national service who may need professional assistance with their mental well-being or their professional future.

What you get

The scheme offers two primary types of assistance. First, you can access mental health support to help manage your psychological well-being while serving. Second, the service provides career transition support, which is designed to help you navigate the changes in your professional path as you move between service and civilian life.

What it costs you

There is no direct monetary cost to you for these services. However, there is an administrative requirement: you must obtain a referral from your unit commander to access the counselling and support services.

The catch to know

One common challenge is that these services are often viewed with a social stigma. Because of this, it is highly recommended that you use the service early if you find yourself struggling, rather than waiting until the situation becomes more difficult to manage.

How to apply

  1. Identify your need for mental health or career transition assistance.
  2. Approach your unit commander to discuss your situation.
  3. Secure a formal referral from your commander to access the service.
  4. Meet with the assigned SAF counsellor to begin your support sessions.
