Fit Note: Who Qualifies and What You Get

Learn how to get a Fit Note if you are unable to work due to illness and need documentation for benefits or insurance.

A Fit Note, sometimes called a sick note, is an official document that confirms you are unable to work because of an illness or injury.

Who it's for

This is for anyone who is unable to carry out their work duties due to health reasons for a period longer than 7 days.

What you get

You receive official documentation that serves as proof of your inability to work. This is often required when you need to make claims for sickness benefits or for insurance purposes.

What it costs you

To obtain this document, you will need to have a consultation with your GP. Depending on your circumstances, you may need to pay for this appointment.

The catch to know

You do not need a doctor's note immediately. For the first 7 days of your illness, you can self-certify your own absence; you should only contact your GP for an official note from the 8th day onwards.

How to apply

  1. Monitor your symptoms to see if they last longer than 7 days.
  2. Contact your GP to book a consultation.
  3. Discuss your health situation with the doctor to see if a note is required.
  4. Use the document to support your benefits or insurance claims.
