Universal Credit Carer Element: Who Qualifies and What You Get

Learn how to get extra monthly support if you receive Universal Credit and spend at least 35 hours a week caring for someone.

This scheme provides additional financial support for people who receive Universal Credit and spend a significant amount of time caring for another person.

Who it's for

To qualify for this support, you must already be receiving Universal Credit. You must also be providing care for someone else for at least 35 hours every week. This requirement is designed to help those who manage the significant time commitment that comes with caregiving responsibilities.

What you get

If you meet the eligibility criteria, you will receive an extra £198.31 per month. This amount is added directly to your standard allowance, helping to offset some of the extra expenses and lost income that often occur when you are providing care.

What it costs you

There is no monetary fee to apply for this element. However, it does require your time and administrative effort. You are required to report your care duties through your online journal to ensure the department has the necessary information to process your claim.

The catch to know

It is important to understand how this interacts with other benefits. If you are also receiving Carer's Allowance, that amount will be deducted from your Universal Credit payment. This means the total increase to your monthly income may be different than the full amount listed above if you receive both.

How to apply

  1. Log in to your official Universal Credit online account.
  2. Use your online journal to report your caregiving responsibilities and the number of hours you spend caring for someone.
  3. Ensure your details regarding the person you care for are up to date in your account.
  4. Wait for the department to review your reported information and update your monthly payment amount.
