The STEM OPT Extension allows certain international students to extend their period of authorized work in the United States for an additional two years.
Who it's for
This is for F-1 students who have completed a degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) field and are currently on post-completion Optional Practical Training. To qualify, you must be working for an employer that participates in the E-Verify program.
What you get
If approved, you receive a 24-month extension of your current work authorization. This allows you to continue working in your field of study for a longer period.
What it costs you
There is a filing fee required when submitting Form I-765. You will also need to complete and submit an I-983 training plan, which outlines your employment and training goals.
The catch to know
You must follow strict reporting requirements. You are required to report your employment information and progress to your Designated School Official (DSO) every six months to maintain your legal status.
