Abono Pecuniário de Férias: Who Qualifies and What You Get

Learn how you can sell part of your vacation time for extra cash under Brazilian labor laws.

This scheme allows employees to trade a portion of their annual leave for extra cash.

Who it's for

To qualify for this option, you must have completed at least 12 months of service with your current employer. This period of employment ensures you have earned the right to manage your vacation time through this specific financial arrangement.

What you get

The benefit provides you with the option to "sell" a portion of your time off. Specifically, you can choose to trade 10 days of your scheduled vacation time in exchange for extra cash. This allows you to receive a lump sum of money instead of taking those specific days away from your working schedule.

What it costs you

Using this scheme requires careful timing and preparation. It is not a spontaneous request you can make at the last minute; you must formally request the arrangement at least 15 days before your scheduled vacation period is set to begin. Failing to meet this notice period may disqualify you from the option for that specific vacation cycle.

The catch to know

The most important thing to understand is that this is not a unilateral right. While the law provides the framework for "vender férias" (selling vacation), the employer must agree to buy the days from you. You cannot simply decide to sell your days; it requires a mutual agreement with your workplace.

How to apply

  1. Confirm that you have completed the required 12 months of service with your employer.
  2. Determine if you wish to sell 10 days of your vacation for extra cash.
  3. Submit your formal request to your employer.
  4. Ensure your request is made no later than 15 days before your vacation is supposed to start.
