Mandatory Health Insurance (OKP/LAMal): Who Qualifies and What You Get
Learn about the mandatory health insurance requirements in Switzerland, including coverage details and how choosing a deductible affects your costs.
This is the basic health insurance that is required by law for anyone living in Switzerland.
Who it's for
This scheme is mandatory for every person who has been a resident in Switzerland for more than three months.
What you get
You receive standard medical coverage that includes protection for illnesses, accidents, and maternity.
What it costs you
You must pay monthly premiums, and the amount you pay depends on where you live (your canton) and the deductible you choose. You will also need to provide proof of your residency to enroll.
The catch to know
You are required to choose a deductible (known locally as a Franchise). If you choose a higher deductible, your monthly premium will be lower, but you will have to pay more out-of-pocket if you require medical care.
How to apply
- Find a private insurance provider to offer you a policy.
- Select the deductible level that best fits your budget and health needs.
- Provide your residency documents to the insurer.
