Maternity Insurance Scheme: Who Qualifies and What You Get

Learn how to claim maternity benefits in Switzerland, including eligibility requirements and how much income you can receive after childbirth.

The Maternity Insurance Scheme provides financial support to mothers to help cover living costs following the birth of a child.

Who it's for

This scheme is designed for mothers who are either employed or self-employed. It provides coverage for a period of 14 weeks after the birth.

What you get

You can receive a payment equal to 80% of your average income. Please note that this amount is capped at a maximum of 220 CHF per day.

What it costs you

To qualify for these payments, you must have been insured under AVS (the national social security system) for at least 9 months prior to the birth of your child.

The catch to know

You do not apply directly to the government office; instead, you must submit your application through your employer's compensation fund.

How to apply

  1. Confirm you have been insured under AVS for the required 9-month period.
  2. Contact your employer's compensation fund to request the necessary paperwork.
  3. Submit your completed application to the fund.
