eID Function (Online-Ausweisfunktion): Who Qualifies and What You Get

Learn how to use your biometric ID card to access government and private services digitally through the eID function.

The eID function allows you to use your official identification card to verify your identity online for various digital services.

Who it's for

This service is available to all German citizens and residents who possess a biometric ID card.

What you get

You receive a secure digital identity that lets you access both government and private sector portals online. This allows you to complete many official tasks from home without needing to visit an office in person.

What it costs you

The service is free. To use it, you will need an NFC-enabled smartphone or a card reader. NFC is the contactless technology often used for mobile payments.

The catch to know

You are required to use a 6-digit PIN to authorize your identity. Many users forget this PIN, and if you do, you will have to visit your local citizens' office (Bürgeramt) to have it reset.

How to apply

Because this is a feature built into your existing identification card rather than a separate registration, there is no traditional application process. To use the function, you must:

  1. Possess a valid biometric ID card.
  2. Have an NFC-enabled smartphone or a card reader available.
  3. Access a supported service that accepts the eID function.
