Sick Pay Continuation: Who Qualifies and What You Get

Learn how to receive your full salary if you are unable to work due to illness for up to six weeks.

This scheme ensures that employees continue to receive their regular income if they are unable to work due to illness.

Who it's for

This is for employees who are unable to perform their jobs because they are sick for a period of up to six weeks.

What you get

You will receive 100% of your regular salary while you are unable to work.

What it costs you

There is no monetary cost to access this benefit, but you must provide a doctor's note (Arbeitsunfähigkeitsbescheinigung) by the third day of your illness to prove you are unfit for work.

The catch to know

This specific payment only lasts for the first six weeks of your illness. If you remain sick for longer than six weeks, you will stop receiving your regular salary from your employer and will instead switch to Krankengeld, which is paid by your health insurer.

How to apply

  1. Visit your doctor to be examined.
  2. Obtain a doctor's note (Arbeitsunfähigkeitsbescheinigung) to prove your illness.
  3. Submit this note to your employer by the third day of your sickness.
  4. Confirm with your employer that your full salary is being processed.
