Tax Registration Questionnaire: Who Qualifies and What You Get

Learn how to register your new freelance or self-employed activity in Germany to get the tax ID you need for invoicing.

This questionnaire is a mandatory registration process for anyone starting a freelance or self-employed business in Germany. Completing it notifies the tax office of your new activity so they can set up your tax account.

Who it's for

This is for anyone starting a freelance or self-employed activity.

What you get

Once processed, you will receive an official tax ID (known locally as a Steuernummer). You need this number to legally issue invoices to your clients.

What it costs you

There is no direct fee to submit this, but you must complete it online via the ELSTER portal. You are expected to submit this within a few weeks of starting your business activity.

The catch to know

When you fill out the form, you will be asked to estimate how much profit you expect to make. If you estimate your profit too high, the tax office may require you to make large advance tax payments (Vorauszahlungen) throughout the year.

How to apply

  1. Access the ELSTER online portal.
  2. Locate the registration form for tax registration.
  3. Fill in your personal details and estimated income.
  4. Submit the form electronically to the tax office.
