Electronic ID Card: Who Qualifies and What You Get

Learn how to use your digital identity for secure access to government services and banking portals.

The Electronic ID Card provides a digital identity that allows you to access various online services securely. This digital feature is integrated into your official identification to help you manage your affairs in a digital environment.

Who it's for

This scheme is available to all German citizens and residents who are holders of a modern version of the national identity card (Personalausweis). If your physical identification document includes the necessary electronic components, you are eligible to use these digital functions.

What you get

By using the electronic function of your ID, you receive a secure digital identity. This digital identity is specifically designed to let you verify your identity online when accessing various government and banking portals. It is intended to make navigating official digital services and financial platforms more streamlined and secure for the user.

What it costs you

Using the digital identity function does not carry a direct fee, but it does require specific hardware and information from you. You must own a smartphone that features NFC (Near Field Communication) technology to communicate with your ID card. Additionally, you are responsible for managing and remembering your specific PIN, which is required to authenticate your identity during digital sessions.

The catch to know

The most common problem users encounter is forgetting their assigned eID PIN. Because this PIN is required to authorize your digital identity for use on websites, losing it can temporarily prevent you from accessing the services you need.

How to apply

  1. Confirm that your current national identity card is a modern version with the electronic function included.
  2. Ensure you have a smartphone available that is equipped with NFC technology.
  3. Set up and securely store your personal eID PIN to allow for authentication.
  4. Visit the official government or banking portal you wish to use and follow their prompts to verify your identity using your card and smartphone.
