Rehabilitative Sports: Who Qualifies and What You Get

Learn how students with chronic physical issues can access prescribed group exercise sessions through their health insurance.

Rehabilitative Sports is a program that provides supervised group exercise sessions for people recovering from physical injuries or managing chronic health conditions.

Who it's for

This scheme is designed specifically for students who are dealing with chronic physical issues or injuries. If your studies are being impacted by long-term physical limitations or you are recovering from a significant injury, you may be eligible to participate in these sessions to help manage your health.

What you get

If you qualify, you can access structured group exercise sessions. These sessions are designed to assist with physical rehabilitation through guided movement in a group setting. This approach is intended to help students maintain physical health and manage long-term conditions alongside their academic responsibilities.

What it costs you

While the sessions are provided through your statutory health insurance, there is an administrative requirement to access them. You must visit your general practitioner (GP) to discuss your physical condition and obtain a formal prescription, known locally as a 'Rezept'. This prescription is the necessary document to prove your medical need to the insurance provider and the sports facility.

The catch to know

It is important to understand that this benefit is not an open-ended service. The scheme is limited to a specific number of sessions per year. Once you have used up your allotted number of sessions for the year, you will need to consult with your doctor again regarding your medical needs.

How to apply

  1. Schedule an appointment with your general practitioner to discuss your chronic condition or injury.
  2. Request that your doctor issue a 'Rezept' (prescription) specifically for rehabilitative sports sessions.
  3. Contact your statutory health insurance provider to confirm which local facilities accept this prescription.
  4. Take your prescription to a participating facility to begin your group exercise sessions.
