Foreigner Identity Number (NIE): Who Qualifies and What You Get

Learn how to obtain your NIE, the essential tax identification number required for all legal and financial transactions while living in Spain.

The Foreigner Identity Number (NIE) is a unique identification number assigned to non-citizens living or working in Spain. It serves as your official tax ID for all legal and administrative matters.

Who it's for

This scheme is for any foreigner who is living or working in Spain and needs to conduct official business.

What you get

You receive a unique tax identification number. This number is mandatory for performing legal transactions, such as opening a bank account, signing a rental contract, or paying taxes.

What it costs you

There is a small fee of approximately 12€ to process the application. You will need to provide your passport and schedule an appointment at the Extranjería (the immigration office).

The catch to know

Securing an appointment (known as a Cita previa) can be notoriously difficult. Many people find it helpful to use a digital certificate to manage the booking process online.

How to apply

  1. Gather your required documentation, including a valid passport.
  2. Schedule an appointment at the Extranjería through the official booking system.
  3. Attend your appointment in person to submit your details.
  4. Pay the required fee at the time of application.
