Public Mental Health Support: Who Qualifies and What You Get

Learn how to access psychological counseling and psychiatric support through the national health system in Spain.

This scheme provides access to mental health services through the national healthcare system to help citizens manage their psychological well-being.

Who it's for

To qualify for these services, you must be a resident with a valid health card. You cannot self-refer to a specialist; instead, you must first visit your GP to discuss your needs. The GP must then provide a formal referral to confirm you require specialized mental health care.

What you get

Once you are referred, the scheme provides access to professional psychological counseling and psychiatric support. This includes sessions with a public psychologist (Psicólogo público) and, where necessary, care from psychiatric professionals to help you manage your mental health through the national healthcare framework.

What it costs you

While the medical services themselves are part of the public health system, the primary cost is your time. You will need to navigate the medical appointment system, which involves waiting for initial consultations with your GP and subsequent follow-ups with specialists.

The catch to know

The most significant hurdle is the length of the waitlist. While emergency situations are prioritized, the waitlist for non-emergency cases can be months long. You should plan your care accordingly if you are looking for regular, ongoing counseling sessions.

How to apply

  1. Schedule an appointment with your local GP to discuss your mental health concerns.
  2. Explain your symptoms or psychological needs to your doctor during the consultation.
  3. Obtain a formal referral from your GP to the mental health department.
  4. Wait for the healthcare system to process the referral and contact you with an appointment date.
