Convention Médicale: Who Qualifies and What You Get

A guide for general practitioners and specialists in France regarding practice sectors and fee structures.

This is the formal agreement between medical professionals and the national health insurance system that dictates how doctors are reimbursed and how they charge their patients.

Who it's for

This scheme is designed for healthcare providers who operate within the medical field. Specifically, it applies to general practitioners who manage primary care and specialists who provide specific medical expertise. It is the regulatory framework used to manage the relationship between these medical practitioners and the national health insurance system.

What you get

The benefits of this agreement involve how you are compensated for your medical services. What you actually receive is variable and depends entirely on which practice sector you choose to operate under:

  • Secteur 1: This involves following the standard rates set by the health insurance system.
  • Secteur 2: This allows for different reimbursement structures based on your chosen practice sector.

The specific financial outcomes of your medical practice are tied to these different sectors, which determine how your services are billed and how the insurance system interacts with your practice.

What it costs you

There is no upfront fee to enter into this agreement. However, the "cost" is found in your administrative and financial obligations. Your choice of sector dictates how you manage your professional billing and how much you must contribute toward social charges. You must also dedicate time to navigating the administrative requirements and professional portals required by the national health insurance system to keep your practice running.

The catch to know

The most important thing to understand is the trade-off regarding fee flexibility. If you choose to be a Sector 2 doctor, you have the freedom to set your own fees, which can include what are known as dépassements d'honoraires (fees charged above the standard rate). While this offers more control over your income, it comes with the catch of facing higher social charges compared to other sectors.

How to apply

  1. Evaluate your preferred practice model to decide between secteur 1 or secteur 2.
  2. Prepare your professional medical credentials and practice details.
  3. Navigate the administrative requirements and portals managed by the national health insurance body.
  4. Finalize your registration to ensure your billing and reimbursements are correctly aligned with your chosen sector.
