Private Health Insurance (Mutuelle): Who Qualifies and What You Get

Learn how private health insurance covers the costs not paid for by the state health system in France.

In France, a private health insurance—often called a "Mutuelle"—is a policy used to cover medical costs that the state health system does not pay for.

Who it's for

This coverage is available to everyone.

What you get

When you visit a doctor or buy medicine, the state health system pays for a portion of the cost. The "ticket modérateur" is the remaining part of the bill that you are normally responsible for paying yourself. A private insurance policy covers this remaining amount so you are reimbursed for those out-of-pocket expenses.

What it costs you

You pay for this coverage through a monthly premium.

The catch to know

If you are an employee, your employer is usually required to pay for part of your insurance. You should check your employment contract to see how much they contribute before you look for an individual plan.

How to apply

  1. Compare different private insurance providers to find a plan that fits your needs.
  2. Check if your current employer already provides a company plan.
  3. Sign up through a private insurer or an insurance broker.
  4. Submit your medical receipts to the insurer to claim your reimbursements.
