Services à la personne (SAP) tax credit: Who Qualifies and What You Get

Learn how the SAP tax credit works for tutoring clients and what registration requirements are needed to claim the benefit.

This tax credit allows individuals who hire tutoring services to reduce their overall tax burden by claiming a portion of the fees paid to their tutor.

Who it's for

This scheme is designed for clients who hire private tutors to assist with educational needs. To be eligible for the tax benefit, the person being hired must be registered as an SAP provider. This means the tutor must have the correct official status to ensure the client can successfully claim the credit during their tax declaration.

What you get

Clients who use these services can receive a tax credit of 50% on the tutoring fees they have paid. This benefit is intended to make educational support more accessible by lowering the effective cost of hiring a private tutor through a significant reduction in the client's tax liability.

What it costs you

For the service provider, there is a requirement to maintain an annual registration with the DREETS to ensure they remain in good standing. For the client, the cost is the standard fee for the tutoring services received, though they will see a benefit when they file their taxes.

The catch to know

The most important thing to understand is that the tax credit is not automatically applied to the client's bill. You must be officially approved or declared under the SAP status for your clients to be able to claim this benefit. If a tutor is not properly registered or declared, the client will not be able to use the 50% tax credit for the fees they paid to that tutor.

How to apply

  1. Confirm that the tutor is officially registered as an SAP service provider.
  2. Ensure the tutor has completed their annual registration with the DREETS.
  3. Obtain the necessary proof of payment and service details from the tutor.
  4. Include the tutoring expenses in your annual tax declaration to claim the 50% credit.
