SPID: Who Qualifies and What You Get

Learn how SPID provides a single digital identity for accessing all Italian public administration services online.

SPID is a digital identity system that allows you to log in to various government and public administration websites using a single set of credentials.

Who it's for

This system is available to all citizens of Italy and anyone living in the country.

What you get

Once you have your credentials, you get single sign-on access. This means you can use one login to access all different public administration portals without needing to create separate accounts for every single website.

What it costs you

The service is free if you complete the setup process through a webcam or by visiting an office in person. However, if you choose to use a private provider to manage your identity, you may have to pay a fee.

The catch to know

For many sensitive services, such as banking and financial portals, you cannot simply use a password. You will be required to use Level 2 authentication, which involves using a one-time password (OTP) sent to your device to verify your identity.

How to apply

  1. Visit the official portal to view the list of available providers.
  2. Choose whether you want to use a free method or a paid private provider.
  3. Follow the identity verification steps required by your chosen provider.
  4. Use your new credentials to log in to public services.
