Corporate Seal Registration: Who Qualifies and What You Get

Learn how to register your company's official seal to obtain the certificates required for high-level business contracts in Japan.

This scheme allows a registered company to officially register its seal so that the government can issue certificates proving the seal is authentic.

Who it's for

All registered companies qualify for this registration. If your business is officially registered, you are eligible to use this system to formalize your corporate identity through an official seal.

What you get

Once the registration is complete, you gain access to the official seal certificate, known locally as 印鑑証明書. This document is a vital tool for your business operations, as it provides an official government verification of your company's seal. You will need these certificates to finalize and validate high-level business contracts, ensuring that all significant legal agreements signed on behalf of your company are recognized as authentic.

What it costs you

Registering and maintaining these certificates involves a small fee per certificate issued. Because this process requires official verification, you must physically visit the Legal Affairs Bureau to complete the necessary steps and collect your documentation. You should account for both the small monetary fee per certificate and the time required to visit the bureau in person.

The catch to know

It is important to be aware that digital versions of these certificates are still not universally accepted. Many traditional banks continue to require the physical paper version of the seal certificate for their official procedures, so you may need to maintain a supply of paper copies to ensure your business transactions are not delayed.

How to apply

  1. Ensure your company is fully registered and you have your official company seal ready.
  2. Locate your nearest Legal Affairs Bureau office.
  3. Visit the bureau in person to submit your application.
  4. Complete the required paperwork to request your certificates.
  5. Pay the small fee required for each certificate issued.
