Moving Out/In Notification: Who Qualifies and What You Get

Learn how to manage your residency records when moving to a new city in Japan to ensure your taxes and insurance remain up to date.

This scheme allows you to officially update your residential address with the government when you change homes. It is a required process for maintaining correct residency records.

Who it's for

This notification process is for anyone who is moving to a new city. If your home address is changing, you must use this system to update your official status with the local government.

What you get

When you complete these notifications, you ensure the seamless transfer of your essential public records. This includes your tax records, health insurance details, and pension information. Keeping these records updated ensures that your social services and financial obligations are correctly linked to your current place of residence.

What it costs you

The primary cost of this scheme is your time and effort. You will need to physically visit the municipal city office in your old location to file your moving out notice. Afterward, you must also visit the municipal city office in your new location to complete the registration.

The catch to know

The most important thing to remember is the order of operations. You cannot simply show up at your new city office to register. You must first obtain a 'Tenshutsu Shomeisho' (a certificate of moving out) from your old city. This document is required to prove you have officially left your previous residence before the new city will allow you to register your new address.

How to apply

  1. Visit the municipal office in your current city to file your moving out notice (転出届).
  2. Request and receive your official 'Tenshutsu Shomeisho' from the staff.
  3. Travel to your new city and visit the local municipal office.
  4. Present your certificate and your documents to the new office to finalize your move.
