Korea Exchange (KRX): Who Qualifies and What You Get

Learn how to access the KOSPI and KOSDAQ markets and the costs involved in trading through the Korea Exchange.

The Korea Exchange (KRX) is the central marketplace that provides the necessary infrastructure for buying and selling various types of securities in South Korea.

Who it's for

This system is designed to be accessible to all investors. You do not need to apply to the exchange directly; instead, any individual investor can participate in the market by opening an account through a registered brokerage firm.

What you get

By using the exchange, you gain access to the primary South Korean stock markets. This includes the KOSPI market, which typically features large-scale companies, and the KOSDAQ market, which is often focused on growth-oriented or technology-driven businesses. These markets provide the platform required to conduct 주식거래, or stock trading.

What it costs you

There is no direct membership fee to use the exchange as an individual. However, it is not free to trade. Every time you buy or sell securities, you will be charged brokerage commission fees by the firm you use to execute your trades. You should check with your specific provider to understand their fee structure for different types of transactions.

The catch to know

You cannot trade whenever you want. The exchange operates on a strict schedule, and trading hours are strictly limited to the window between 09:00 and 15:30. If you attempt to place trades outside of these specific hours, they will not be processed by the market.

How to apply

  1. Research and choose a registered brokerage firm that offers trading services.
  2. Complete the account opening process required by your chosen broker.
  3. Transfer your investment capital into your new brokerage account.
  4. Use your broker's digital platform or tools to select stocks and execute trades on the KOSPI or KOSDAQ.
