Voluntary Social Security Continuation: Who Qualifies and What You Get

Learn how to maintain your pension contributions through voluntary payments even after you have left formal employment.

This scheme allows people who are no longer working in a formal job to keep contributing to their social security so they can qualify for a pension later.

Who it's for

This is for individuals who have previously worked in formal employment but are currently not covered by social security and want to continue building their pension benefits.

What you get

By participating, you ensure the continued accumulation of weeks (known locally as semanas cotizadas) required to qualify for your retirement pension.

What it costs you

You are required to make monthly payments. The amount you pay is determined by the salary bracket you were in when you last held a formal job.

The catch to know

You cannot wait indefinitely to join this scheme; you must enroll within five years of leaving your formal employment.

How to apply

  • Gather your recent employment and social security records.
  • Determine the salary bracket you wish to contribute under.
  • Contact the social security agency to begin your enrollment.
  • Set up your regular monthly payment schedule.
