Referenced Tax Payment: Who Qualifies and What You Get

Learn how to use a standardized payment line to settle your tax obligations in Mexico without errors.

A Referenced Tax Payment provides you with a standardized payment line, known locally as a Línea de captura, to ensure your tax settlements are processed correctly by the authorities.

Who it's for

This system is available to all taxpayers who need to settle tax obligations through the official channels. Whether you are an individual or a business, anyone required to make a tax payment can use this method to ensure the funds are attributed to the correct account.

What you get

You receive a specific, standardized payment line, referred to in Spanish as a Línea de captura. This unique string of numbers acts as a direct identifier for your specific tax debt or obligation. By using this line, you ensure that your money is applied to the exact tax type and period required, preventing manual errors or funds being sent to the wrong category.

What it costs you

There is no direct fee to generate this payment line through the government system. The process is managed digitally, and you generate the necessary documentation via the official SAT portal. While the generation itself does not cost you a fee, you must still pay the actual tax amount specified on the line through your chosen banking method.

The catch to know

The most important thing to remember is that the payment line is not permanent. Once the Línea de captura is generated, it is only valid for a limited window of time. If you do not complete your payment within 24 hours, the line will expire. If this happens, the payment will not be recognized by the system, and you will have to log back into the portal to generate a new one.

How to apply

  1. Access the official SAT portal using your credentials.
  2. Locate the section dedicated to tax payments and obligations.
  3. Follow the prompts to generate your specific Línea de captura.
  4. Use the generated code to complete your transaction through your bank within the 24-hour validity period.
