Annual Tax Return: Who Qualifies and What You Get
Learn how employees and freelancers in Mexico can claim a tax refund by managing their deductible expenses and digital invoices.
The Annual Tax Return is a yearly process where you report your income and expenses to the tax authorities to ensure you have paid the correct amount of tax.
Who it's for
This process is required for employees and freelancers working in Mexico.
What you get
Depending on your financial activity, you may receive a tax refund (known locally as a Saldo a favor) if your deductible expenses reduce your total tax liability.
What it costs you
There is no fee to file this return. However, it requires you to have collected digital tax invoices (CFDI) for all your qualifying expenses throughout the year.
The catch to know
To make sure your expenses count toward a refund, you must request a "Factura" (a formal digital invoice) at the exact time of every purchase. If you do not request the invoice during the transaction, you cannot claim the expense later.
How to apply
- Gather all your digital tax invoices (CFDI) for deductible expenses.
- Access the official tax portal.
- Follow the steps to file your annual declaration.
- Submit the information for review by the tax authorities.
