Taxpayer Registry: Who Qualifies and What You Get

Learn how to obtain your official tax ID in Mexico to manage your banking, employment, and formal business activities.

The Taxpayer Registry is a formal system used to identify individuals and businesses for tax purposes. Having this registration is a legal requirement for anyone performing formal work or conducting business.

Who it's for

This registry is for all adults who earn income, whether through a job or by running a business.

What you get

By registering, you receive an official tax ID. You will need this ID for almost all formal activities, including opening or maintaining bank accounts and securing formal employment.

What it costs you

There is no fee to register; the process is free. However, you must invest time to schedule and attend an appointment at a SAT office.

The catch to know

When you register, you will be issued digital credentials called 'Contraseña' and 'e.firma.' It is vital that you keep these secure and do not lose them, as they are required to manage your tax obligations.

How to apply

  1. Visit the official SAT portal to start the process.
  2. Schedule an appointment (Cita en el SAT) at a local office.
  3. Attend your appointment in person to finalize your registration.
  4. Securely store your digital credentials once they are issued.
