SPEI (Electronic Payment System): Who Qualifies and What You Get

Learn how the SPEI system works in Mexico, how to use it for bank transfers, and why you must double-check your details before sending money.

SPEI is a digital infrastructure used in Mexico to facilitate the movement of money between different bank accounts through an electronic payment system.

Who it's for

This system is available to all bank account holders. If you have a bank account in Mexico, you are eligible to use this method to send or receive money electronically.

What you get

The system provides a way to perform "Transferencia SPEI" (SPEI transfers), which allows for the near-instant movement of funds between different financial institutions. This is the standard method used for digital transactions, allowing you to pay for goods, services, or send money to individuals without needing physical cash.

What it costs you

For most everyday users, using the system is free when accessed through your bank's mobile application or online banking platform. You should check your specific bank's terms to confirm if there are any service fees for certain types of transfers, but for most people, it is a no-cost way to manage money.

The catch to know

The most important thing to remember is that transfers are irreversible. Once the transaction is processed and the money has left your account, you cannot simply "undo" it. Because of this, you must always double-check the recipient's CLABE number—which is the unique 18-digit identification number for a Mexican bank account—before you hit the confirm button. Sending money to the wrong number is a common mistake that is difficult to fix.

How to apply

  1. Open your official banking app or log in to your bank's website.
  2. Locate the section for electronic transfers or the specific "Transferencia SPEI" option.
  3. Input the recipient's bank details, making sure to enter the correct CLABE number.
  4. Review the recipient's name and the amount to ensure everything is accurate.
  5. Confirm the transaction to complete the electronic payment.
