Public Transport Chip Card: Who Qualifies and What You Get

Learn how to use the unified payment system for trains, trams, and buses across the Netherlands.

The Public Transport Chip Card is a single payment system that works across various modes of public transport.

Who it's for

This card is available to all public transport users.

What you get

You receive a unified way to pay for your travel across trains, trams, and buses. This eliminates the need to have separate tickets or payment methods for different types of transit.

What it costs you

There is a fee of €7.50 to obtain the card. You must also ensure the card has a sufficient balance to cover your intended trips.

The catch to know

You must remember to "Inchecken" (check in) at the start of your journey and "Uitchecken" (check out) at the end. If you fail to check out, you may be charged the maximum fare for that trip as a penalty.

How to apply

  1. Visit the official website to order your card.
  2. Pay the initial fee for the card itself.
  3. Add a balance to the card to fund your travels.
  4. Use the card to check in and out at transit stations.
