Mandatory Health Insurance: Who Qualifies and What You Get

Learn about the mandatory health insurance requirements for residents in the Netherlands, including monthly costs and how to switch providers.

In the Netherlands, all residents are required by law to have health insurance to ensure everyone has access to medical care.

Who it's for

This scheme is for every resident who is aged 18 or older.

What you get

You receive basic health coverage, known locally as basisverzekering. This is a standardized package of medical care designed to cover essential healthcare needs.

What it costs you

You must pay a monthly premium to your insurance provider. In addition to this regular payment, you are responsible for a mandatory deductible, referred to as eigen risico, which is an amount you must pay out of your own pocket for certain medical services before the insurance begins to cover them.

The catch to know

If you want to switch to a different insurance provider, you must complete the process by December 31st.

How to apply

  1. Research different insurance providers to find a plan that fits your needs.
  2. Choose a provider and sign up through their platform.
  3. Set up your monthly premium payments.
